Siwa is a small desert oasis just a few miles from the Libyan border. It truly is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded on all sides by hundreds of miles of uninhabited, barren Saharan desert.

The mud used in their building construction has a lot of salt. Unfortunately, this means that when rain falls (very, very rare), it's a cataclysmic event: all of their buildings start melting
