Congo (2005)
Brazzaville's Market District
The Marche Total market (named after the Total gas station which marks its main entrance) is Brazzaville's largest and most lively. It was also really touch and go as far as photography was concerned, with reactions ranging from friendly openness to downright vicious hostility--we really had to pick and choose our moments to take these pictures.
You guessed it: the guy in white was not at all happy about being filmed. Too late.
Those black things on the left are fish
It takes a very secure man...
Some areas were so hostile to picture-taking that I kept the camera at chest level and had to sneak no-look pictures, which is why some of these are not straight
The handicapped in the Congo don't use regular wheelchairs: they use a bicycle-like contraption pedaled with the arms
Right after taking this shot I was stopped and questioned by a police officer
In the background is the Total gas station after which the market area is named
Bernard did some of the photography for the billboard in the background
When this fellow saw that I was going to take his picture he borrowed a phone from a friend and acted like he was having a conversation.
